Thanksgiving season tends to pull on the quieter threads of us—the ones that want to pause, take stock, and feel something real under all the calendar noise. Inside every leader lives a small ensemble cast of archetypes, each with its own way of noticing the good, receiving support, and whispering thank you into the world.
Understanding how each one expresses gratitude is a lovely way to understand how you express gratitude. Let’s set the table and invite all six.
“I’m grateful… I think?”
The Survivalist carries strength like muscle memory—steady, reliable, built for storms. Gratitude arrives slowly for them, not because they don’t feel it, but because they’re usually scanning for the next thing that needs to be held together.
When they do speak up, it’s soft and sincere:
“Thanks for checking on me. That mattered more than you know.”
Their gratitude is quiet bravery. A small exhale from someone who rarely pauses long enough to notice what’s good.
“I’m grateful, deeply—and I’ll stand guard around the people who earned it.”
Warriors express gratitude with intensity. They feel loyalty in their bones and appreciation like a spark in the chest. When they thank you, they mean it with their whole being.
Their version sounds like:
“I appreciate you. Truly.”
No theatrics. No fluff. Just conviction.
Their gratitude is power softened into connection.
“I’m grateful! Everything’s wonderful! Let’s not dig too deep!”
The Happy Denier reaches for the lightest version of gratitude first—the breezy surface-level stuff that feels easy to say. But beneath the cheerfulness is a tender heart that longs for safety in vulnerability.
When they feel brave enough to go deeper, their gratitude becomes luminous:
“I’m thankful for the moments I get to be real with people who won’t run from it.”
Their gratitude is hope wrapped in softness.
“I’m grateful… anyway, how are you? No really, let’s talk about you.”
Deflectors express gratitude sideways. They lift others up, redirect attention, and smooth the emotional terrain for everyone around them. Their strength is generosity—giving praise, giving encouragement, giving space.
When they let themselves be still, the truth spills out:
“I’m thankful you stick with me, even when I’m hard to read.”
Their gratitude is relational—deep, loyal, and humble.
“I made a gratitude system. Color-coded. Chronological. Please sit down.”
Obsessors express gratitude through devotion—care woven into structure, intention turned into action. Their strength is how deeply they invest in what matters.
Underneath all that organization is a simple truth:
“I’m grateful because I care. A lot.”
Their gratitude is wholehearted presence, expressed with meticulous love.
“After thorough consideration, I’ve concluded: I’m grateful.”
Professors speak gratitude in acts more than words. Their strength is thoughtful observation—how they notice what you need, how they show up consistently, how they steady the room without fanfare.
When they do articulate their appreciation, it’s precise and meaningful:
“I value the way you show up. I notice more than I say.”
Their gratitude is clarity without spectacle.
Closing the Circle
Gratitude doesn’t look the same in every part of you. Some pieces speak softly; some speak boldly; some speak in spreadsheets. All of them are trying, in their own way, to acknowledge what’s good, what’s steady, and what’s worth holding close.
This Thanksgiving, may you feel the fullness of your inner team—their strengths, their sincerity, and all the ways they help you move through the world.
You contain multitudes, and every one of them has something to be thankful for.
May your week hold small mercies, warm pockets of quiet, and at least one moment where your inner crew raises their mismatched glasses in a collective “thanks.”
With warmth and steadiness,
Elise
