Feedback: The Fine Art of Coaching Without the Whistle 📢

Feb 20, 2025

Let’s talk about feedback. It’s the bread and butter of leadership, but sometimes it can feel more like trying to butter toast in a hurricane—messy, chaotic, and liable to leave someone salty.

Picture this: You’re in a meeting. A team member delivers a presentation that… well, let’s just say it “needs improvement.” You want to help them grow, but how do you give feedback that lands without crushing their confidence?

Or maybe it’s the flip side: You’ve asked your team for feedback, and you get… crickets. Are they afraid to speak up? Or worse, do they think you don’t want to hear it?

The Feedback Tightrope

Giving and receiving feedback is a delicate balance, but it’s also one of the most powerful tools in your leadership toolkit. Here’s how to approach it Human-Solution-Style.

  1. Understanding Self (Owning Your Side of the House): Understand your own feedback style. Are you a “straight shooter,” telling it like it is? Or a “sandwich artist,” wrapping critiques in layers of praise? Knowing your tendencies helps you tailor your approach. If you are an Archetype-nerd like we are, you know that a Warrior has a very different feedback style than an Obsessor.
  2. Understanding Others (Inquiring About Their Side of the House): Tailor feedback to the person receiving it. This is not about coddling or tiptoeing around people. It is about effectiveness. How do you frame your feedback so that the person HEARS YOU? That introverted analyst on your team might need a private conversation with data to back up your points. Your big-idea extrovert? They are probably okay with a direct approach and will thrive on a collaborative plan with a little side of encouragement.
  3. Focus on the Growth, Not Just the Gripe: Feedback isn’t just about pointing out what’s wrong or redirecting behavior — it’s about showing the path forward and modeling a growth mindset. Instead of “This didn’t work,” try “Here’s how we can make this even better.” Consistent, thoughtful, emotionally intelligent feedback builds the culture of your team/organization.

Real-Life Feedback Fumbles (and Fixes)

Scenario 1: The Overload You give too much feedback at once, and your team member looks like they’ve just been hit by a feedback freight train. Fix: Prioritize. Focus on one or two key points that will make the biggest impact.

Scenario 2: The “Nice” Trap You want to soften the blow, so you’re overly vague: “It’s good, but, you know, maybe just tweak it a bit?” Fix: Be specific. Vague feedback leaves people guessing. Brene said it best, “Clear is kind.”

Scenario 3: The Silent Leader You hold back, thinking no feedback is better than risking offense. Fix: Silence isn’t golden — it’s confusing and is fertile soil for misunderstanding. Even a simple “You’re on the right track, let’s adjust here” can work wonders.

Your Role as Coach

Great leaders aren’t just bosses; they’re coaches. They give feedback that builds trust, strengthens relationships, and creates a culture where everyone feels empowered to learn and improve.

So the next time you’re faced with a feedback moment, remember:

  • Be clear.
  • Be kind.
  • Be specific.

You’ve got this—and so does your team.
