💾 A Gen X/Millennial Crossover Crisis Wrapped in Paperback Nostalgia and Existential Workplace Dread
If you were an 80s baby like me, your first taste of free will wasn’t your boss handing you “full autonomy” or a life coach telling you to “step into your power”—it was a flimsy paperback with a holographic dragon on the cover and instructions that read: “Turn to page 84 if you want to fight the sorcerer. Turn to page 112 if you want to crawl into a suspiciously glowing cave.”
Naturally, I chose both. I always chose both.
And now, four decades, 42.5 bajillion therapist bills, and a small mountain of slide decks on “emotional agility” later, I’ve realized: being a leader in today’s world feels exactly like one of those Choose Your Own Adventure books—except all the pages are on fire, and your direct report just Slacked you a crying emoji.
So, in a moment of creative chaos (and possibly caffeine-fueled regression), I imagined what each of our six leadership archetypes might look like… if they were cast as 1980s adventure books.
Retro covers. Terrible fonts. Existential dread dressed as dragons. Let’s begin.

📕 The Warrior: THE ENDLESS BATTLE
You’re the hero of the story. Can you win without burning out?
The Warrior believes success is forged in fire and Slack notifications. They don’t walk into meetings—they charge. Every email is a duel. Every task, a test of valor. But behind the chainmail and meticulously color-coded Trello board lies a truth: you cannot swordfight your way to sustainability.
This book ends one of two ways: with your glorious victory… or with you asleep at your desk in full armor.
✨ Alt Ending: You finally delegate, realize your team is actually competent, and weep.

📘 The Survivalist: THE CAVE OF CONTROL
You’re the hero of the story. Will you let go before the cave collapses?
The Survivalist doesn’t lead—they white-knuckle. They’ve built an empire out of Post-Its, deadlines, and a deep-seated fear of failure. Trusting others feels like trying to French kiss a porcupine.
In this adventure, you grip the clipboard tighter as the walls close in. But what if—hear me out—you dropped the clipboard and walked toward the light?
✨ Alt Ending: You let your team take one task. The world doesn’t end. Confetti falls from the ceiling.

📙 The Happy Denier: THE ISLAND OF FINE
You’re the hero of the story. Can you escape the illusion of comfort?
“I’m fine.”
You’re not. You’re emotionally waterboarding yourself with toxic positivity while Rome (and your org chart) burns.
This archetype builds a tiki bar on top of a volcano and then tells everyone, “I just love the view.” Their story is a beach read that slowly becomes a thriller.
✨ Alt Ending: You admit things are hard, cry in the break room, and emerge radiant.
📗 The Deflector: THE MIRROR MAZE
You’re the hero of the story. Will you face the truth or keep dodging the path?
Ah yes, the leader who can give feedback but can’t take it. Who dodges every mirror like it’s showing spoilers.
This book features a maze of reflective surfaces, each showing you… you.
It’s a horror story, a romcom, and a redemption arc all in one—if you make it past Chapter 3.
✨ Alt Ending: You sit with your discomfort. It blinks. You blink back. You both survive.

📒 The Obsessor: THE LABYRINTH OF PERFECTION
You’re the hero of the story. Will you make it out before it’s too late?
This story begins with a simple project and ends with you buried alive under 47 versions of the same Google Doc.
You believe perfection is protection. But let’s be honest: your fear of failure has a spreadsheet. And a backup spreadsheet.
✨ Alt Ending: You ship the draft. It’s 87% perfect. The world keeps spinning.

📓 The Professor: THE TOWER OF INSIGHT
You’re the hero of the story. Can you come down and connect?
In this epic, you live in a tower made of theories, books, and 360 feedback reports from 2017. You know everything—except how your team feels on Monday morning.
This story has all the makings of a cerebral classic… if you can find your way back to the ground floor.
✨ Alt Ending: You log off Notion and have an actual conversation. Growth ensues.
🎯 So what now?
If you’re thinking, “Wait… I am one of these people,” first of all: hi, me too. 👋 Second: that’s the point. These archetypes aren’t flaws—they’re coping strategies. But they don’t have to be the ending.
That’s why SHE and ManageSmart exist—for leaders who are done living choose-your-own disasters and are ready to co-write something better. With tools. With community. With clarity.
